I am a bass player and teacher. Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan where I was introduced to Jazz at Community High by Bart Polot. B.A. in English from Oberlin College in 1985. Jazz Disc jockey at WOBC for four years. Humanities Teacher at Maumee Valley Country Day School in Toledo, Ohio (where I also coached Basketball, Soccer, and Track) . Recipient of two National Endowment for the Humanities Grants for Secondary School Teachers (to study Ralph Waldo Emerson and Shakespeare). Created and directed the Maumee Valley Jazz Ensemble. Moved to Seattle in 1989 to pursue music full-time. Completed two years of Master's course-work in the Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington. Studied Persian Tar with Dariush Talai and Sufi singing with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Founded the Ev Stern Jazz Workshop in 1994 to assist aspiring jazz musicians to reach their goals. Taught "Music Cultures of the World" at The Northwest School from 1997 to 1999. Taught Jazz Ensembles at The Seattle Drum School 2002-2003 Studied Jazz Improvisation with Marc Seales (UW 1990-1994), Classical Doublebass w/ Barry Lieberman (UW 1991-), Jazz Bass w/Doug Miller (UW 1999), Chuck Bergeron (1998), Jazz Improvisation w/ Jerome Gray (1990). Participated in the Banff Creative Jazz Orchestra w/ Hugh Fraser (2003) I've performed over a thousand times, and I feel lucky and honored to have done so with many great musicians to whom I am indebted for sharing their knowledge, experience, and swing with me. They are too numerous to mention, but I have done some recording w/ these projects.
