Dr. Dubious and the Agnostics

Based in Teaneck NJ

Dr. Dubious performs the hot jazz of the 1920's and 1930's featuring early jazz classics, male and female vocals, novelty tunes and referencing all of the early jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Fats Waller, Sidney Bechet, etc. Our line-up is clarinet (doubling alto and C-Melody sax), cornet (doubling flugelhorn), trombone, tuba, pianoand  banjo (doubling guitar). We can tailor a program to fit the client's theme or program and venue considerations and perform indoors or outdoors, in parades, Mardi Gras themed concerts, concerts highlighting the early jazz greats, such as Louis Armstrong, weddings, private parties, corporate events, concerts for seniors communities, civic and library concerts . . .

Founded in 1998 by Tom Duncan, the eponymous Dr. Dubious, the band plays Dixieland jazz from the early part of the 20th Century in the New Orleans and Chicago styles. Committed to preserving America’s only true original art form – JAZZ - while also keeping it very much alive through performance, we provide an entertaining and educational program suitable for libraries, summer park concerts, retirement communities, assisted living and nursing home facilities, as well as parties, weddings, corporate and private events.

Because jazz originated in New Orleans we can provide authentic music for Mardi Gras themed functions, including funerals, memorials and church services. We also do Roaring Twenties and Gatsby themes, indoor and outdoor venues, large and small. Any event where the sound of early jazz will enhance the ambience or hold an audience’s attention.

We’d love to talk to you about your needs and desires.

The buzz about town… What people are saying about our Teaneck New Jersey Jazz band.

• Anyone who was within an hours drive of Mahwah, and didn't make the effort to attend the FREE Mardi Gras Concert at the Mahwah Library by us.....EAT YOUR HEART OUT!!! This band just gets better and better, and no wonder because of the exceptional lineup of musicians Tom assembles for his events!" - posting by self-styled "appreciator" of traditional jazz

• "We are convinced that you were all the reason that our wedding was such a success! You got our party going and put everyone in the perfect mood for a celebration." - wedding client

“Dr. Dubious & the Agnostics played at our wedding last weekend at the cocktail party and after the dinner service. The band were highly professional, accommodating to requests, looked great and arrived early. Perfect music permeated the event. The cocktail hour out in the garden overlooking the water with beautiful jazz wafting out on the breeze and dappled sunlight falling to the grass through the trees and the scent of flowers everywhere was like something out of a movie. The guests loved that they weren't subjected to heavy amplification and hyper DJs with leis during the dancing part of the wedding. Just a wonderful party, due mostly to the wonderful musicians.“
