BIOGRAPHY
At the age of eight, the jazz organ arrangements of Jimmy Smith struck a chord of harmony in the ears of Leslie Byrd. In the years to follow, Leslie would invite his lifelong idol for a jam session. Leslie’s extensive musical background and education radiated as he absorbed all he could from that evening of magic.
Leslie’s educational interest in music continued after Franklin High School. Where he excelled at the Cornish School of Music and Seattle University. In 1973, Leslie put his studies to work as a professional jazz musician. He formed the Leslie Byrd Trio which arose from the inspirations he acquired along the way. After gaining a solid musical foundation with the trio, Leslie decided to go on the road. He joined a variety of bands touring throughout the Pacific Northwest, the United States and Canada. He soon joined a national tour with the Lester Chambers Group of the Chambers Brothers whose hit song was Time Has Come Today. Leslie traveled to Los Angeles where opportunities arose playing original funk, R&B, Top 40 and jazz. That led to additional recordings and concert dates with other artists like Charlie Allen and Pacific Gas & Electric, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Lou Rawls, Bobby Caldwell, Laura Lavi, Jean Carne, Bloodstone, Michael Cooper and Confunksun, Tower of Power, The Spencer Davis Group, Jonny “Guitar” Watson, Bob Brown, Theresa Thomas, Carmel Waters, Diamond Rio and Bernadette Bascom.
In 1988 Leslie formed the Leslie Byrd Network. This group of musicians plays a variety of music including jazz, blues, pop, and rhythm & blues. The Leslie Byrd Network features some of the best musicians in the country with Leslie Byrd providing the driving rhythm on the Hammond B-3 organ, with the talent Leslie possesses, he is at a turning point in his expanding career.
