Matthew Greif - Solo Guitar

Based in Redondo Beach California

Matthew Greif stands out as a rare guitarist who navigates the realms of classical, jazz, and rock music with equal authenticity. His musical journey includes membership in the Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) since 2006, a renowned ensemble with whom he has toured globally and co-created five albums. Notably, "Road to the Sun," one of these albums, was crafted in collaboration with jazz legend Pat Metheny. While LAGQ is a cornerstone of his work, Matt's artistic spectrum extends to diverse concert settings. Recently, he's been involved in remarkable projects with the L.A. Philharmonic and has premiered compositions by notable figures like Frank Zappa, Jeffery Holmes, and Nico Muhly.

Matthew's rich diversity finds expression in his recorded works. His debut album, "Permanent Transition," received critical acclaim and introduced audiences to world and classical solo compositions, as well as duo improvisations alongside Andrew York and Dusan Bogdanovic. The album "Circle" showcases his contemporary jazz sensibilities, featuring predominantly original compositions. Collaborators of note on this record include accomplished talents like bassist Ric Fierabracci (known for his work with Chick Corea) and drummers Walter Rodriguez and Cougar Estrada (affiliated with Los Lobos). Matthew's most recent creation, "In Time," explores the realm of nylon-string crossover music. He has also ventured into the rock and roots genre with an original song called "Water in the Desert," recorded alongside Ric Fierabracci and legendary drummer Gary Novak. Moreover, he teamed up with Scott Tennant for a duet on the Delos album "Wild Mountain Thyme."

Currently, Matthew imparts his expertise as a teacher of classical and jazz guitar at El Camino College. With a musical upbringing in a family of musicians, he was exposed to a multitude of instruments and genres. His formal education in jazz and classical music unfolded at the University of Southern California under the guidance of notable instructors like William Kanengiser, James Smith, Joe Diorio, and Frank Potenza.
