Fred Hoadley – Piano & Tres
An influential figure in the Pacific Northwest Latin music scene, Fred Hoadley has spent decades bringing the sounds of Afro-Cuban jazz and salsa to Seattle audiences. Originally from New England, Fred studied music at Hampshire College and the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where his teachers included jazz luminaries Jaki Byard, Vishnu Wood, and Charlie Banacos. In 1983, he founded the Seattle salsa band Bochinche and produced the group's first album, helping establish a vibrant Latin music presence in the region.
Fred later founded the acclaimed Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble Sonando, whose recordings released in 1994, 1998, and 2006 received critical recognition across the country. His extensive musical background includes performances with Sonando, Charanga Danzón, Wesito & Friends, The Susan Carr Ensemble, and Sexteto Tradicuba. Equally comfortable at the piano or playing the traditional Cuban tres, Fred brings exceptional musical knowledge, creative improvisation, and a deep appreciation for the roots of Latin jazz to every performance.
Ben Verdier – Bass
A versatile and highly accomplished musician, Ben Verdier brings exceptional musical depth and rhythmic versatility to the trio. Performing professionally since 1985, Ben studied classical and jazz theory and piano performance with George Barth while earning his bachelor's degree in computer science at Stanford University. His broad musical expertise encompasses salsa, Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban music, Brazilian styles, traditional jazz, rock, funk, ragtime, and classical music.
Ben's extensive performance experience includes collaborations with Cambalache, Sonando, Charanga Danzón, The Alma Villegas Quartet, and Sexteto Tradicuba. His ability to navigate complex Latin rhythms while maintaining the expressive freedom of jazz provides a strong musical foundation for the trio. Whether supporting a gentle Brazilian melody or driving an energetic Afro-Cuban arrangement, Ben's musicianship adds richness, precision, and character to the ensemble's sound.
Tom Bergersen – Congas & Percussion
Providing the rhythmic heartbeat of the Fred Hoadley Sonando Trio is accomplished percussionist Tom Bergersen. With extensive experience performing in the Pacific Northwest Latin music community, Tom has worked with notable ensembles including Los Boys, El Conjunto Fabuloso, and Bochinche. His musical credits also extend into the world of professional dance, including performances with the Bill Evans Modern Dance Company and Pacific Northwest Ballet.
Tom's dedication to the folkloric traditions of Latin music led him to Stanford University, where he studied with the Danza Nacional de Cuba under the direction of Regino Jimenez Saez. This specialized training gives his performances a deep connection to the traditional rhythms and cultural foundations of Afro-Cuban music. Currently performing with Sonando and Orchestra Zarabanda, Tom brings expressive percussion, rhythmic authenticity, and infectious musical energy to the trio.
