Meet The Band!
David Ertel
A lifelong lover of harmony-driven music, David Ertel’s passion was sparked by family jam sessions in the garage with his father and uncle. Influenced by artists like Billy Joel, the Eagles, and the Beach Boys, he taught himself piano and began crafting a repertoire that led him to performance and songwriting. He has played in original and cover bands, including Products of 77 and Odie Ray, and regularly performs in Florida with cousin Logan Grant Ertel. David also holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Marian University.
Connor Ertel
Connor Ertel first picked up a guitar at 13, inspired by his musical friends and the surf-rock sound of The Ventures. Initially focused on guitar, he gradually found his voice thanks to encouragement from his bandmates. A co-founder of Sounds of Summer, he now embraces lead vocal duties with pride. Connor balances his musical life with his work as a physical therapist and his most cherished roles—husband and father of two.
Eric Wernke
Music has always been central in Eric Wernke’s life, thanks to his mother’s early guidance and a house filled with instruments. Inspired by the Beach Boys and Beatles, he gravitated toward drumming and singing, forming early bands with his brother, cousins, and friends—including the trio that would become the heart of Sounds of Summer. A devoted performer and a high school math teacher in North Vernon, Indiana, Eric continues to share his love of music with passion and gratitude.
Matt Hurley
Matt Hurley’s musical journey began in childhood, strumming a badminton racket before picking up a real guitar. With a love for vintage rock and harmony, he played early hits by Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys alongside his cousin Eric. Their band evolved into the trio Younger Brother, which would later grow into Sounds of Summer. Though initially living out of state, Matt eventually joined the band full-time and now performs while also working as a truck driver and personal trainer, and serving in his church’s praise band.
